Tech now plays such a big part in everyone’s travel planning and holiday enjoyment, making everything more efficient and generally easier when travelling. On the flip-side though when tech failures happen when travelling it can be the difference between a dream, relaxing holiday or a stressful time, causing major headaches. Follow our top tips below to get the best from your travel tech.

1. Save on Mobile Roaming Costs with eSIMs or Local SIMs

Avoid excessive roaming charges by purchasing an eSIM or local SIM card. These options provide affordable data plans and allow you to stay connected without any nasty surprise charges. We used the Maya eSim in Europe and would recommend as a great option.

Top Tip – If you’re taking your mobile sim overseas double check for coverage as well, we found that Telstra Pre-paid didn’t operate in countries like Italy, Spain and Switzerland.

2. Invest in a Portable WiFi Modem

If you’re unsure about WiFi availability at your destination or need a reliable connection for remote work, a portable WiFi modem can be a lifesaver. Stay connected wherever you go. It can be more expensive but worth it for the peace of mind.

3. Use a Universal Travel Adapter

Travelling to lots of different countries and unsure of the plug type needed, take the stress away by buying a universal adapter that includes USB ports for charging multiple devices at once.

Top tip – In Europe not all plugs are the same –  countries like Italy, UK, Ireland & Cyprus use different standards so double check before you go.

4. Download Local Apps for Travel and Sightseeing

Before you arrive, download local apps for transportation, sightseeing, and services.

  • Transport Apps: Essential for navigating buses, trains, and trams.
  • Google Translate: Great for translating signs and menus.
  • Unique Local Apps: Research for the best local apps. For example, in Bordeaux, there’s an app for the bridge opening times – Pont Chaban Bdx

5. Prepare for Tourist Audio Guides

Many attractions now offer audio guides via apps. Ensure you have enough data or WiFi to download them and bring a pair of headphones for a seamless experience.

6. Always Carry a Portable Charger

Always have a portable charger and the right connection cords. Last thing anyone wants when travelling is to run out of battery in a new place and be stranded somewhere.

7. Be Cautious with Google Maps

As mentioned before google maps is incredible, how people travelled before I really don’t know! However it still has limitations so use it with caution…

  • Limitations: It may misdirect you down country lanes or small streets, which can lead to some pretty hairy driving if not careful.
  • Transport Data: Bus schedules and timetables aren’t always accurate.
    Double-check local information when possible.

8. Backup Your Travel Documents

Don’t rely solely on your phone for access to reservations, boarding passes, or confirmations.

  • Save copies on your laptop or tablet and if you are travelling with someone get them to save them too.
  • For extra security, print hard copies.

9. Prepare for Two-Factor Authentication Issues

If your phone is your primary method for two-factor authentication, ensure it still works after switching SIMs. Losing access to accounts like your banking can be a nightmare.

10. Get Your Entertainment Tech Ready

If you’re travelling a lot chances are you’re going to have sometime when you need entertaining. Make sure you’re prepared to make the most of the downtime by getting some good entertainment options lined up ready to go.

  • Streaming Services: Use a VPN to access your subscriptions abroad.
  • Offline Downloads: Save movies, shows, and books before your trip.
  • E-Readers: A Kindle is perfect for book lovers, and Amazon Prime offers free books and affordable unlimited reading packages that can be accessed from you phones and tablets wherever you are. It also eliminates carrying heavy, bulky books with limited luggage allowances.

Bonus tips: Invest in some great tech gadgets to make life easier some of our favourites include – luggage scales, luggage tracker tags, a powerboard and adapter connectors

Follow these travel tech tips to avoid unnecessary stress so that you can focus on just enjoying your travels.
