Sharing my love of the good things in life – travel & food, so we can all be spritzinguplife in style.

When we headed to Albania due to visa restrictions, we had no idea what to expect. All we knew was that Albania was being touted as Europe’s new trendy destination. The reactions we got when we shared our plans fell into two distinct camps:

  1. Why on earth would you go to Albania? Everyone there is trying to leave!
  2. Wow, I’ve seen it on TikTok! It’s supposed to be the Maldives of Europe.

We spent five weeks in Sarandë during July and August, and it turned out to be such a great decision. The vibe was incredible, the people were lovely, the food delicious, the beaches stunning (though not quite Maldives-level), and the experience was cheap and fun. If you’re considering a trip, here’s everything you should know before booking your Albanian Riviera holiday.

Why We Loved Albania

1.Crystal-Clear Water: The water is so blue and refreshing, you’ll want to dive right in. It’s perfect for cooling off on those hot summer days and there are plenty of affordable beach clubs around to laze around and make the most of the views.

2. Affordable Prices: Albania is a budget traveller’s dream. Think €5 spritzers, fresh seafood platters for €15, and hearty meals that could easily feed two for under €10.

3. Vibrant Atmosphere: Sarandë’s main strip is alive with great bars, restaurants, and people enjoying life. Venture a bit further out, and you’ll find quieter spots with equally amazing food and a more laid-back vibe.

4. Plenty to Do: From visiting the Blue Eye spring to exploring Ksamil’s beaches, Butrint’s ancient ruins, and the castle in Gjirokastër’s Old Town, there’s no shortage of adventures and the scenery along the way is quite something to see.

5. Tourist-Friendly: Albania is safe and welcoming. Most locals speak English, and the restaurants, bars, and facilities are clean and modern. You’ll also discover a rich culture that’s both intriguing and accessible.

Things to Be Aware Of:

1. Cash is King: Many places don’t accept card payments. While euros are commonly used, you’ll need Albanian leke for smaller local spots. Note that leke isn’t available outside Albania, so hit the ATM as soon as you arrive.

2. Drink Bottled Water: Avoid drinking tap water. Stick to bottled water, and like in Greece, dispose of toilet paper in the bins.

3. Summer Crowds: Summer is peak season, so expect heavy traffic, packed buses, and high temperatures.

4. Visible Poverty: Albania is still a developing country. Seeing families struggling on the streets can be heartbreaking, and it’s a reminder of the challenges faced by many locals.

5. Imperfections: Beaches can have rubbish (Italy has similar issues in parts), and you’ll need to stay alert for uneven pavements and stray wires while walking. They also run to their own times, so allow lots of extra time when travelling on ferries and buses etc.

Getting There: The easiest and cheapest way to get to the Albanian Riviera from Europe is by ferry from Corfu. Tirana’s main airport is about a 3.5-hour drive from Sarandë, and public transport options are limited, often requiring a stop at Tirana’s bus station.

Just note that the ferry’s can be a great way to travel but allow plenty of time as the fast ones are often cancelled and the slow ones take longer than they tell you.

Albania surprised us in the best way possible. It’s a destination full of charm, culture, and adventure, perfect for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience. If you’re ready for affordable fun and stunning scenery, pack your bags and set your sights on the Albanian Riviera.
