Seville Tips – Spritzy Snapshot
Best Restaurant – Maria Trifulca
Located right beside Triana bridge and overlooking the Guadalquivir River, means the setting is already made for a memorable dining experience. However, it’s not just the location that makes this a must visit for foodies. It is a truly gastronomical experience from start to finish. The most coveted spot is the rooftop which needs booking far in advance and whilst we could only book into the salon area, I think it made for a better table. Here it was a lot more intimate, we had amazing service and still had a great view without overheating. The menu highlight was the tuna ribs, a dish I have never seen before and would order again in a heartbeat and the anchovy butter. It also offered a great wine list and after eating we extended our very long lunch with cocktails at the upstairs bar.
Best Tapas – Catalina La Barra, La Alfalfa
Sevilla is a city with tapas bars every 50 metres and most of them are delicious and good value. Of all the tapas bars we went to though (and there were a lot) Catalina, was the place that stood out most for the combination of the trendy, buzzy atmosphere mainly from locals and the delicious variety of tapas food on offer. The standout dish was the pork montaditos, which made your mouth water with the combination of the sweet brioche, melted cheese and delicious bbq pork. We loved all of the tapas we had here though and would definitely head back next time we are here.
Best Neighbourhood – Triana
One of the best parts of Sevilla is exploring all of the different neighbourhoods. They are all unique and worth visiting to get a real flavour of this beautiful city. If we had to pick one though, we fell in love with Triana. It has the most amazing food market that you can do your local shop or just sit and taste the local delights over a drink or lunch in amongst the shoppers. There are countless tapas bars in Triana, ceramic shops, the best patisseries, local churches and flamingo shows and it is always bustling with both locals and tourists laughing and eating and generally enjoying life together. What a place.
Rooftop Bar – Abba Sevilla Hotel Bar
Sevilla has lots of rooftop bars to enjoy which give you an incredible view over the city. Some of them are very busy and hard to get into, but we found a hidden gem at Abba Sevilla Hotel Bar. This rooftop is set overlooking one of the best architectural structures in Sevilla the Setas De Sevilla and we could get a great spot, enjoy a delicious spritz and snack on some croquettes in the sun. What more could you want.
Bar with a Riverview – Manhattan
Manhattan is the perfect spot to sit back, relax and take in Sevilla’s breath-taking beauty along the Guadalquivir River whilst enjoying an afternoon refreshing Tinto de Verano or spritz. It’s slightly away from the throngs of tourists and more towards the Park Maria Luigi but it is worth making the extra walk.
Best for Nightlife – Alameda De Hercules
If you want to experience Sevilla’s local nightlife, then Alameda De Hercules is the area for you. In the day this area has markets and full of children and families playing and enjoying a tapas lunch, but at night this place is party central. Full of lively bars and young people drinking outside and dancing inside. This is merely the warmup before moving onto the late-night clubs to dance the night away.
Must see – Setas De Seville
If you are looking for one of the most unique buildings and experiences in the city, then Setas De Seville is the place to go. This is the largest wooden structure in the world, and it is an incredible sight to see something so modern in amongst the historical architecture that defines much of the city. The highlight is you can not only appreciate this structure from below, you can also walk along it, giving you a birds eye view of the city.
Culture Lovers – Flamenco show at La Madriguela de Mai
You cannot visit Sevilla without seeing a local flamenco show. There are many options to see these on the streets, outside the Plaza de Espana, visiting a local bar or going to a special performance. I was desperate to find one that wasn’t super touristy and gave a more authentic performance and that’s when we found La Madriguela de Mai. This intimate bar seated about 20 people and tickets included dinner with dishes of your choice, a drink and an incredible 2 hr performance including a dancer, singer and musician that made the hairs on your arms stand on end it was so captivating. Shows we on every Wed, Thurs, Fri & Sat 21:00 when we were there.
Romantic Souls – Plaza De Espana & Park Maria Luigi
This is up there with one of the most beautiful buildings I have seen. It’s like walking onto a film set. The combination of the palace, the water canal in front, the sound of music and dancing reverberating around the plaza and the unique ceramic seating representing each area of Spain is a sight to truly behold. You could spend hours here just soaking it all up.
History Lovers – Sevilla Cathedral Rooftop Tour
Sevilla Cathedral is a UNESCO heritage site and the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and home to the tomb of Christopher Columbus. It is a must visit as a key feature of the city and it is a spectacular building both inside and out. We took the rooftop guided tour and would highly recommend this as a unique way to see the cathedral. With the 10.30am tour, you can avoid the long queues, and you also have 30 mins before other tourists are allowed entry, so it’s a lot quieter to appreciate this impressive building without being too crowded. In addition to the Cathedral, you also get access to Giralda and the Salvador church, so I recommend allowing a good ½ day to see it all properly.
Design and Nature Lovers – Royal Alcazar of Sevilla
Like much of Sevilla, The Royal Alcazar is a truly beautiful place to visit and as one of the oldest Royal Palaces in Europe still in use it’s another place not to be missed. The unique architecture of the palace dates back to the early Middle Ages and combines various design elements over the years, including Gothic and renaissance features and the beautiful tilework of Mudejar designs. Hidden in amongst the middle of the city, the magnitude of the gardens offers the biggest surprise, with eye-catching water features, rows of palm trees and more peacocks than I have ever seen in my life. This is a place you can spend hours just losing yourself in, admiring the palace in all its beauty. Top tip – make sure you book in advance and take photo ID. You won’t get in without it.
