Bordeaux – Top 5 Places to Visit for Foodies
Famous for it's big, bold red wines Bordeaux is one of the most gastronomically amazing places in the world and a must visit for any Food and Wine lovers. You will be spoilt for choice for great restaurants, bars, markets and local food delicacies. Here are 5 places I recommend visiting to get the best taste of this beautiful city.
2. Les Halles Des Baclans
This upmarket Food Hall is a foodies heaven. It has everything you could want - freshly shucked oysters, Bistecca on the grill, Duck confit, Charcuterie to die for, Pintxos, home-made pasta and the most delicious pastries. But what we really loved was the atmosphere, it's a vibe. Full of locals and tourists everyone is drinking good wine, eating delicious cheap food and simply having the best time both indoors and outdoors. One not to be missed.
1. Marche Des Quais
Bordeaux has many great food markets but this one along the left bank on a Sunday morning was our favourite. It's a beautiful spot to take in the river Garonne and wander aimlessly through the numerous food stalls to taste France's finest produce. Highlights for us included the fromages, rotisserie chicken (perfect for Sunday lunch) and don't miss the crepes. You are in for a treat.
3. Le Bar a Vin
Bordeaux is synonomous with world class wine and this wine bar is the perfect place to sample fine wines without breaking the bank. It's in the same building as the Bordeaux wine school & Council so they know their wines. The sommeliers are full of recommendations and everything is available at ridiculously low prices, (2.50 Euro's for a rose & Grand Cru's for 11 Euro's). It's also set in a beautiful building with stain glass windows, making it the ideal place to sit back and enjoy the taste of Bordeaux.
4. La Cité du Vin
This is the only dedicated Wine Museum in the world and it is a must see if you are a wine lover. A great interactive museum including the history of wine, different styles & processes that are used around the world, sensory experiences and tasting options. There is a lot here, so allow plenty of time. There is also a wine shop, cafe and restaurant, which offers great views and delicious fine dining food.
5. Marche De Capucins
Marche De Capucins is Bordeaux's most largest and most famous market. Nicknamed the "Belly of Bordeaux", it has everything you need here to sample the local produce - bakery's, seafood, butchers, cheeses, wines but it also is a great spot to come and enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants or food stalls. We sat at a Tapas Bar and watched the hustle and bustle of the market in action whilst enjoying our lunch.
